Ghana Armed Forces clear 122km of Accra-Kumasi expressway corridor in 12 Weeks-Ato Forson
The Ghana Armed Forces have cleared 122 kilometres, representing about 70 per cent of the right-of-way for the 176-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway, within just 12 weeks, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Dr. Forson said the exercise forms part of government’s preparations towards the commencement of construction of the flagship project under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
He explained that the expressway project requires a wide corridor to accommodate the six-lane dual carriageway, interchanges, bridges and other modern road infrastructure.
According to him, the remaining portion of the corridor is expected to be cleared by the first week of September 2026, paving the way for the next stages of the project.
“As of 22nd July 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces have cleared 122 kilometres, representing about 70 per cent of the 120-metre-wide right of way in just 12 weeks. The entire corridor is expected to be cleared by the first week of September 2026,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.
He added that compensation assessments, environmental studies, engineering designs and feasibility works are progressing simultaneously, with the feasibility study and detailed engineering design expected to be completed by the end of August 2026.
Dr. Forson further disclosed that procurement for the main construction contract will begin in September 2026, following the completion of the preparatory processes.
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway, when completed, is expected to reduce travel time between Ghana’s two major cities to about two hours, improve road safety, ease congestion and support economic activity along the corridor.
Government has also secured US$1.7 billion for the project, deposited into a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana, with the funds ring-fenced for use after the main construction contract is awarded.
