Bishop Bowers School has emerged champions of the third edition of the Perfect Series Basic School Assessment Contest, defeating four other finalists in a fiercely contested grand finale held at the Accra Academy campus in Accra.
The annual competition is designed to identify and nurture critical thinkers among basic school pupils across Ghana through a rigorous written examination.
Unlike the traditional quiz competitions, contestants from Basic 3 to Basic 6 sit for a one-hour written assessment under strict examination conditions and camera surveillance, testing their academic ability and critical thinking skills.
The grand finale featured five schools from the Greater Accra region: Salvation Army Basic Schools A and B, Bishop Bowers School, Ideel Community School, and St. Theresa’s School, with the defending champions also in contention.
Despite entering the competition as underdogs, Bishop Bowers School stunned their rivals to claim the ultimate prize. The winners received a GH¢6,000 cash prize, a trophy, medals, books and citations.
Ideel Community School finished second, followed by Salvation Army Basic School B in third place, Salvation Army Basic School A in fourth, while the defending champions, St. Theresa’s School placed fifth.
Speaking after the victory, the Assistant Headteacher of Bishop Bowers School Mr. Robert Asare expressed excitement over the achievement, attributing the success to the learners’ hard work and dedication. He also appealed to parents to continue supporting their children’s education to help them excel.
Founder of the initiative, Pastor Philip Sarpong, called on the government and non-governmental organisations to support the programme and expand it into a nationwide competition for basic schools.
He said such support would help discover and develop more academically gifted pupils while promoting critical thinking among young learners across the country.
