Cabinet revokes EI-144 to restore full protection for Achimota forest reserve

The Government has announced a historic Cabinet decision to revoke Executive Instrument (EI) 144, as amended by EI-234, restoring the Achimota Forest to its original status as a protected forest reserve.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series, describing the June 24, 2026 Cabinet decision as a major step towards protecting one of Accra’s last remaining forest reserves.

He said the revocation ensures that the Achimota Forest retains its original status as a forest reserve while serving as an ecological safety zone for Accra and its surrounding communities.

Mr. Buah noted that the Achimota Forest is the last significant forest cover within the capital city, making its protection critical to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

“This is the only last man standing forest cover in Accra, and President Mahama is determined to protect it at all costs,” the Minister stated.

He described the decision as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and preserving vital green spaces for future generations.
