Bagbin Calls on Parliament to Spearhead the Fight Against Corruption

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Members of Parliament to take a leading role in promoting accountability and combating corruption, stressing that Parliament’s responsibility extends beyond lawmaking.

Speaking at a regional conference on the financialisation of politics in Africa in Accra on Tuesday, July 14, Bagbin said Parliament must strengthen oversight of political financing and public institutions to safeguard Ghana’s democracy. He noted that the effective implementation of anti-corruption measures is essential to preserving democratic integrity.

The Speaker highlighted initiatives undertaken by Parliament to enhance transparency, ethical conduct and institutional oversight. He also urged African countries to deepen collaboration in improving governance and strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions.

According to Bagbin, Parliament has a constitutional duty to hold public institutions accountable, particularly in the management of state resources.

“Parliament has a critical role in safeguarding democratic integrity and ensuring accountability in political financing,” he said. “The people expect us to hold institutions accountable. There is no institution of governance that can say they are independent of Parliament”, Says Him.
