Man declared dead in hospital painfully recounts waking up in the mortuary

A Kenyan man, Jonathan Mutua, has shared his remarkable survival story after reportedly waking up in a mortuary hours after doctors had pronounced him dead following a serious quarry accident.

Mutua, a father of four and a quarry supervisor from Machakos County, suffered life-threatening injuries when a section of a quarry wall collapsed, trapping him and several co-workers. The accident left him with extensive injuries, including a fractured spine, broken ribs, and severe internal trauma.

He was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical care, where doctors performed surgery in an attempt to save his life. During the procedure, medical personnel reportedly concluded that his vital organs had failed and informed his family that he had passed away.

In a dramatic twist, Mutua says he regained consciousness in the early hours of the next morning while lying inside the hospital mortuary. Confused and extremely thirsty, he called out for water, only to realise he was surrounded by bodies.

Mortuary attendants were shocked when they heard his voice and discovered that he was still alive.

At the time, his relatives had already been notified of his death and had begun preparations for his funeral.

Following the discovery, Mutua was immediately transferred back to the hospital for further treatment and monitoring.

Although he survived the ordeal, the severe injuries he sustained in the accident left him paralysed, and he now depends on a wheelchair for mobility.
