GNFS blames access challenges for the delayed response to the Accra Central fire outbreak

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has cited poor accessibility and crowd interference as key factors that delayed efforts to contain a major fire outbreak near the Accra Central Police Station.
According to GNFS Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey, firefighters faced significant difficulties reaching the scene after receiving reports of a fire engulfing a storey building on Wednesday evening.d.
“The fire was fully developed and well alight when we got there,” he said, noting that additional support had to be mobilized from several fire stations, including Parliament House, Circle, the Industrial Area, and the Ministries, to help bring the situation under control.
Mr. Nartey also revealed that emergency operations were hampered by large crowds at the scene, with some individuals obstructing firefighters’ work. He described the situation as worrying, especially as numerous gas cylinders inside the building exploded during the incident, posing serious risks to response teams.
Despite the challenges, the GNFS focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby facilities, including a Ghana Water Limited office, warehouses, and banking institutions in the area.
He emphasized that firefighters successfully contained the blaze and protected surrounding properties from damage.
