“Step Down, This Is for Gen Zs” – Awingobit Tells Afoko to Abandon NPP General Secretary Bid

By Maurice Otoo

Executive Director of the Importers and Exporters Association, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has urged former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko to step aside from the race for the party’s Chairmanship position, insisting that the current political era belongs to a younger generation of leaders.

Speaking on the New Patriotic Party’s upcoming internal elections on Kessben Maakye show in Accra, Awingobit said Afoko had already achieved enough prominence within the party and should avoid making a political comeback that could dent his legacy.
“Afoko has gotten fame and name already. His era and season has passed and should not worry himself for a comeback,” he stated.

According to him, the NPP’s current transition is focused on empowering younger, energetic figures capable of reconnecting with the party’s grassroots and positioning it for the 2028 general election.
“Everything has its season and time. I don’t want him to destroy his records. This current election is for Gen Z and a new generation of leadership,” Awingobit stressed.

He further claimed that sentiments within the party grassroots strongly favor former NPP General Secretary John Boadu, whom he described as the preferred choice ahead of the internal polls.
“Combing through the grounds, almost everyone in NPP is calling for John Boadu. They have made up their minds before the election comes,” he said.

The comments are expected to intensify conversations within the NPP over leadership renewal, generational change, and the party’s direction as it prepares for future electoral battles.
