A grieving family has accused health workers at Mother and Child medical facility at Kasoa in the Central Region of negligence following the death of a pregnant woman, identified as Abigail Opoku, during childbirth complications.
Speaking on a telephone conversation with Kessben Maakye, Doris Opoku, who identified herself as the deceased’s sister, detailed what the family described as a series of failures by staff that allegedly contributed to Abigail’s death.
According to the statement, the family received a call around 2:00 a.m. from Abigail requesting that they take her to the Mother and Child medical facility. Upon arrival, they claim nurses on duty complained that they had not been informed before the patient was brought in.
The family further alleged that health workers repeatedly cited a lack of available beds at the recovery ward, resulting in Abigail remaining on the floor for hours despite her deteriorating condition.
Doris noted that requests for a Caesarean Section (C.S.) were reportedly rejected due to the unavailability of beds. Doris said they later found Abigail vomiting blood, easing on herself and struggling on her own, with no staff attending to her.
“No doctor attended to my sister till she passed out around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026,” the statement claimed.
The family also alleged that nurses engaged in verbal exchanges with Abigail’s mother while she pleaded for urgent medical care.
According to the account, no doctor was seen during the ordeal, and staff allegedly continued to insist there was no bed in the recovery ward. Abigail reportedly bled continuously until she died.
The family further claimed that before her death, they were asked to purchase some medicine for her only for them to see her dead upon their return. Ironically, the body was sent to the mortuary with the baby still inside her.
At the mortuary, the family alleged they were asked to pay GH¢1,200 before the baby could be removed from the deceased’s body.
In lieu of this, they stated that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Seth Sarbah Banini, with his entourage upon hearing of the incident, visited the family and assured them that justice would be pursued.
The allegations have sparked calls for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abigail Opoku’s death, with concerns raised about maternal healthcare delivery and emergency response systems at the facility.
Authorities are yet to officially respond to the family’s claims.
