Kumasi Central prison to open a big barbershop in Kumasi where inmates will be barbers

The Kumasi Central Prison is set to establish a large commercial barbering shop in Kumasi as part of efforts to enhance inmate rehabilitation and skills development.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the prison, Sergeant George Owusu, during an interview on Kessben Drive with Fante Quoo on Kessben FM. According to him, plans are far advanced for the project, which will see inmates trained and engaged as professional barbers.

Sergeant Owusu explained that the initiative forms part of the prison’s broader strategy to equip inmates with employable skills that will help them reintegrate into society after serving their sentences. He noted that barbering has been identified as a viable trade that can provide a steady source of income for ex-inmates.

He further indicated that the facility will not only serve the public but also act as a practical training center where inmates can gain hands-on experience in grooming and customer service.

The PRO emphasized that the move is aimed at reducing recidivism by empowering inmates with meaningful livelihoods, while also changing public perceptions about prisoners and their ability to contribute positively to society.

The project, once completed, is expected to create a unique link between the prison and the wider Kumasi community, promoting rehabilitation through skill acquisition and social inclusion.
