NPP Slams NDC Over ‘Hypocrisy’ on LGBTQ+ Bill

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Mahama of hypocrisy over their stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, NPP MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, said the NDC had shamelessly shifted their position on the bill after securing power.
“The NDC weaponized the bill, using it as a political tool to deceive eminent clergy, traditional leaders, and the Ghanaian public. Now, having secured power, President Mahama and his government have abandoned the cause they championed,” Rev. Fordjour stated.
The NPP MP recalled that during the 2024 election campaign, Mahama explicitly pledged to sign the bill into law, accusing the then NPP government of delaying the process due to dependence on foreign aid.
However, Rev. Fordjour noted that since assuming power in 2025, the NDC government has begun distancing itself from the bill, citing procedural concerns and prioritizing ‘basic needs’ over the legislation.
“Their actions reveal a strategic shift from ‘push the bill at all costs’ to ‘manage how it is introduced and structured’,” he said.
The NPP has demanded that President Mahama realign his priorities with the will of Ghanaians, introduce a government-sponsored bill, and apologize to the clergy and traditional leaders for the U-turn.
“We call on the Majority Leader and the Speaker of Parliament to ensure swift passage of the reintroduced bill without delay,” Rev. Fordjour urged.
The NPP also condemned reports of the NDC government smuggling LGBTQ+ concepts into school curricula, saying it contradicts Mahama’s promise to instill Ghanaian family values in students.
