Unemployed Disabled Graduates Protest Broken Promises — Analyst Criticizes Government

Story by: Maurice Otoo

A resident analyst on Kessben FM’s Maakye show in Accra, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has strongly criticized government over what he describes as neglect of persons with disabilities, following a demonstration by unemployed disabled graduates.

Reacting to the protest, Nana Frimpong Ziega expressed concern that employment opportunities are often given to able-bodied individuals while qualified persons with disabilities are overlooked.

According to him, the President’s campaign promise to allocate 5% of public sector jobs to persons with disabilities is yet to be fulfilled, leaving many disabled graduates unemployed and frustrated.

He further questioned the decision by former Roads Minister, Hon. Kwasi Amoako Atta, to cancel road tolls, a policy he claims previously provided employment opportunities for some persons with disabilities. Ziega argued that the move was made abruptly and without parliamentary approval, worsening the plight of affected workers.

The analyst also alleged that assurances by Hon. Amoako Atta and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to compensate individuals who lost their jobs following the cancellation of road tolls have not been honored.

He added that some affected individuals who attempted to demand their entitlements were instead met with arrests, describing the situation as unfair and disappointing.

The demonstration by unemployed disabled graduates highlights growing concerns over inclusion, unemployment, and unfulfilled policy commitments, as calls intensify for government to address the needs of persons with disabilities in Ghana’s job market.
