James Owusu, NPP-USA chairman aspirant calls on diaspora members to mobilise resources for Bawumia

Mr. James Owusu, a chairman aspirant of the United States branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on members of the Ghanaian diaspora to play a more strategic role in supporting the party’s presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Statesman, Mr. Owusu said the diaspora community possesses enormous human, financial and logistical capacity that could significantly strengthen the NPP’s electoral fortunes if effectively mobilised and coordinated.
According to him, the NPP’s external branches, particularly in the United States, must intensify their efforts to contribute meaningfully towards securing victory for Dr. Bawumia in the next national polls.
Mr. Owusu stressed that the diaspora remains a critical pillar in the party’s broader campaign architecture. He explained that members of the Ghanaian community abroad had long demonstrated their commitment to the NPP’s ideals and political success, but noted that the time had come to harness those resources more strategically as the 2028 elections approach.
Mr. Owusu stated that the diaspora must move beyond symbolic support and instead focus on a more structured mobilisation of expertise, funding and operational logistics that could strengthen campaign efforts both at home and abroad. He explained that many Ghanaians living overseas possess professional skills and networks that could be deployed to support campaign messaging, voter outreach and policy advocacy.
According to him, the NPP’s external branches have historically contributed to fundraising activities and grassroots mobilisation, but he believes a more coordinated strategy could significantly expand the impact of those efforts. Mr. Owusu emphasised that diaspora members are uniquely positioned to promote the achievements and vision of Dr. Bawumia on the global stage while also supporting campaign operations within Ghana.
He indicated that his ambition to lead the NPP-USA branch is rooted in a desire to strengthen the link between the party’s leadership in Ghana and its supporters abroad. Mr. Owusu said effective leadership within the diaspora structures would be essential to ensuring that supporters in the United States and other parts of the world remain actively engaged in the party’s political activities.
Mr. Owusu further noted that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership credentials and policy orientation make him a compelling candidate capable of sustaining the NPP’s development agenda and winning power from the reckless government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He argued that the former Vice President’s record in areas such as digitalisation, financial inclusion and economic reforms provides a strong foundation upon which the party can build its campaign narrative for the 2028 elections.
Mr. Owusu urged diaspora members to see themselves as ambassadors of the NPP’s vision and policies. He stated that beyond financial contributions, members of the diaspora could help amplify the party’s message by engaging in advocacy, community outreach and strategic communication efforts.
He underscored the importance of unity within the party’s external branches, explaining that internal cohesion would be crucial in presenting a strong front ahead of the next electoral contest. According to him, the NPP’s strength has always been its ability to bring together supporters from different backgrounds in pursuit of a common political objective.
Mr. Owusu said that if given the mandate to lead the NPP-USA branch, he would work to deepen collaboration among diaspora chapters while strengthening engagement with the party’s national leadership. He explained that this approach would help align the activities of external branches with the broader strategic priorities of the party in Ghana.
He emphasised that the 2028 elections would require extensive preparation and resource mobilisation, noting that diaspora contributions could play a decisive role in ensuring a successful campaign. In his view, the collective efforts of party members at home and abroad would be necessary to secure victory for Dr. Bawumia.
Mr. Owusu therefore encouraged Ghanaian professionals, entrepreneurs and students in the diaspora to actively participate in the NPP’s political activities and contribute their expertise towards shaping the party’s future. He indicated that with effective organisation and leadership, the diaspora could become one of the most influential forces in the party’s campaign strategy.
He expressed confidence that with the right level of commitment and coordination, the NPP could secure a decisive mandate in the 2028 elections under the leadership of Dr. Bawumia. Mr. Owusu maintained that the diaspora’s support would be a vital component of that success, urging party members abroad to remain united and focused on the shared goal of returning the NPP to power.
He further pledged to reposition the branch as a unifying force capable of mobilising resources, strengthening grassroots engagement, and contributing meaningfully to the party’s electoral fortunes both at home and abroad, declaring, “Building Together Winning Together #ObiaaWomBi.”
