AU appoints Akufo-Addo to lead election observation mission to Congo

The African Union (AU) has selected former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to head its Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the country’s presidential elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, the Office of the former President announced that the continental body had appointed Mr. Akufo-Addo to oversee the mission that will monitor the elections scheduled for March 15, 2026.

The statement explained that the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) will comprise representatives from several continental institutions and key stakeholder groups.

Participants will include members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the Pan-African Parliament, the African Governance Platform, election management organisations, independent election specialists, civil society groups, as well as representatives of women and youth organisations.

The mission forms part of the African Union’s broader commitment to promoting credible, transparent, and peaceful elections across member states.

According to the statement, the former President is expected to leave Accra on Friday, March 13, to begin the assignment and will return to Ghana on March 18, 2026, after the electoral process has been observed.

Mr. Akufo-Addo’s selection reflects the continued involvement of former African leaders in supporting democratic processes and strengthening election monitoring efforts across the continent.
