No patient will ne turned away — Government reaffirms healthcare expansion plans

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving healthcare access across Ghana, insisting that no patient will be turned away from any health facility, even under challenging conditions.
Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, President Mahama said the government remains focused on expanding healthcare infrastructure and strengthening service delivery to ensure quality healthcare is accessible to all citizens.
“Even under makeshift conditions, we believe no patient should be turned away from any health facility they report to,” President Mahama stated. “Healthcare is a fundamental right, and we will continue to invest in expanding capacity across the country.”
The President announced ongoing works to expand several major health facilities, including the second phase of the Ridge Hospital project in Accra, which is expected to significantly increase bed capacity and improve specialized medical services.
Other key hospital projects highlighted include the completion of the Police Hospital, La General Hospital, Sefwi Regional Hospital, Afari Military Hospital, and the maternity and children’s block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to President Mahama, these projects form part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare delivery system and reduce pressure on major referral hospitals.
“Our goal is to build a stronger, more resilient, and self-reliant health system for all Ghanaians,” he told Parliament. “Investing in healthcare infrastructure is essential to ensuring that every Ghanaian receives timely and quality medical attention.”
The President also emphasized that government will continue to recruit and support healthcare workers while improving logistics and medical equipment supply across public health facilities.
He acknowledged ongoing challenges in the sector but expressed optimism that sustained investments would help transform Ghana’s healthcare system.
The healthcare expansion agenda forms part of the government’s broader development strategy, which also focuses on transportation infrastructure, digital transformation, social protection, and economic recovery programmes.
