CPP Calls for Rebirth, Reconciliation, and Reorganisation on 60th Anniversary of Nkrumah’s Ouster

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has marked the 60th anniversary of the overthrow of its founder, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, with a call for national rebirth, reconciliation, and reorganisation.
In a statement issued on February 24, 2026, the party’s General Secretary, Comrade Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, Esq., said the CPP was seeking to rebuild, reconcile, and reorganise itself, and invited comrades who had left the party to return.
The CPP also expressed gratitude to the government of former President John Dramani Mahama for giving the party justice by renaming the international airport after Nkrumah, and appealed for the return of its confiscated assets, including buildings and frozen accounts.
The party dismissed as lies claims that Nkrumah was a dictator, saying he was a man of the people who respected democratic institutions. It also clarified that the Prevention of Detention Act (PDA) was introduced by Parliament, not Nkrumah, to address security concerns at the time.
The CPP said the 1966 coup was unjustified and had set Ghana back, and called for national reflection on the country’s progress since independence

60 YEARS AFTER OSAGYEFO – A TIME FOR REBIRTH, RECONCILIATION, AND REORGANISATION
Comrade Ghanaians and Worldwide Nkrumaists, today the 24th February 2026, brings memories of how Ghana lost her way to Glory through an unfortunate coup d’etat.
When our Forefathers led by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah embarked on the quest for independence, they were seeking Political Independence and Economic Independence.
The Political Independence which was to allow the Ghanaian shed off every political micromanagement by external forces was achieved on 6th March 1957.
The second Independence was Economic Independence which was to Liberate Ghanaians from depending on foreign loans and grants to develop our country.
On the back of this, the CPP government and Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah embarked on full scale industrialization, where about 450 factories were producing made in Ghana products.
This vision and progress was short lived when a group of indisciplined soldiers took arms that were meant to protect the people of Ghana and weaponized them against law abiding citizens
who were perceived loyalists of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
In an attempt to legitimise the unfortunate and unacceptable coup d’état, history was distorted by people who were supposed to know better.
THE LIES THAT OSAGYEFO DR. KWAME NKRUMAH WAS A DICTATOR
The facts should be stated that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was never a dictator. It is absurd to say that a listening leader who was elected through a well constituted public Assembly can be referred to as such.
He recognised Parliament, and took every proposed policy to the first August house for deliberation, ratification and official approval.
Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was a man of the people, he knew this, and respected them accordingly.
THE INTRODUCTION OF PDA
There was a time in Ghana where terror stared at all Ghanaians, including Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Several assassination attempts were made on his life, even by people who had sworn
an oath to protect him.
In the wake of this, a proposal was made to Parliament by the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Interior, to seek permission to identify, interrogate and detain persons who were capable of carrying out attacks on the people of Ghana.
Dear Comrade Ghanaians and Worldwide Nkrumaists, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah did not introduce the Prevention Detention Act, it was done by Parliament, and Parliament introduced the PDA to curb the insecurity which was at its height in order to save Ghanaians.
THE ONE PARTY STATE
A lie has been told over and over again that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah introduced a one party State in Ghana. This is a fallacy and it is being peddled by intellectually dishonest people.
Due to the over politicization of everything in Ghana which also heightened tensions and insecurity, there was a proposal to focus on what was called The Ghana Agenda.
This agenda was to put political differences at that time aside and concentrate on building Ghana as a first class economy.
To find out if majority of Ghanaians supported this, a referendum was held on 31st January 1964 and 99% of Ghanaians chose the Ghanaian agenda agreeing that the CPP government should champion the development of Ghana and that all political parties must support the
decision.
These aforementioned incidents are facts and historical antecedents which cannot be altered.
Therefore the 1966 coup plotters had no business overthrowing the democratic government of the Ghanaian people.
APPRECIATION
The Convention People’s Party wants to take this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s government, and the majority in Parliament for giving the CPP justice after all these years.
The CPP has been very worried and aggrieved that our international airport was named after one of those who perpetuated a grievous cardinal sin against Ghana 60 years ago today. A sin that we are still paying for daily, a very bad example which should not have happened.
The CPP also pleads with the President and the majority in parliament to kindly return all confiscated assets of the Party back to the Party.
Our assets, including buildings which were party offices, and frozen party accounts, inter alia, were legitimately acquired by our forefathers, but were illegally seized.
The CPP is from today reopening our doors to all Comrades who have left the party due to grievances, as well as Comrades who were suspended or expelled for breaching the Party’s constitution.
This is part of the Party’s strategy to Rebuild, Reconcile and Reorganise the Party.
FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER
Yours Comradely,
Comrade Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, Esq.
GENERAL SECRETARY
