The former Ayawaso West Wougon Youth organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Yeboah has called for urgent national action to revive Ghana’s agricultural sector, warning that the country’s dependence on imported tomatoes and other staples poses a serious threat to economic stability and food security .

Speaking on Kessben Maakye today, Kwadwo Yeboah said Ghana currently produces barely half of what it consumes despite having vast fertile lands suitable for large-scale farming.

He urged authorities to deliberately engage state agencies citing Prison Service in agriculture by securing lands, providing tools and registering interested participants under structured programmes.

Referencing a Ghanaian who is reportedly said to be the brain behind Nigeria’s rice cultivation that has led to the cancellation of their rice imports.

According to him, introducing organized agricultural labour initiatives could significantly increase production.

Mr. Yeboah also highlighted storage and marketing challenges affecting tomato farmers, stressing that improved infrastructure would prevent post-harvest losses and boost farmers’ income.

Adding to this conversation, the former NDC Parliamentary aspirant of Ngleshie Amanfro Alex Akouko reiterated,

“The challenge we are going through as a nation is self-inflicted,” he stated, adding that meaningful youth participation in farming would reduce unemployment while strengthening the local economy.

He further appealed to government to prioritise agriculture as a security measure, arguing that food sufficiency directly contributes to national stability and long-term economic growth.

The call adds to ongoing public discussions on how Ghana can cut down its food import bill and create sustainable jobs through agribusiness development.
