Many Ghanaian houses don’t have good earthing systems, that’s why their electricity finishes early – Benjamin Obeng, PRO of ECG

Benjamin Obeng, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Ashanti West, has attributed the problem of fast electricity consumption in many homes to poor earthing systems.

Speaking on Kessben Maakye with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Mr. Obeng stated that many Ghanaian houses are not properly earthed, a situation he says contributes to electrical inefficiencies and higher power usage. According to him, while some customers complain that their prepaid electricity “finishes early,” the root cause in several cases may be faulty wiring and inadequate earthing rather than excessive appliance use.

He explained that a proper earthing system provides a safe path for excess electrical current to flow into the ground, helping to stabilize power supply and protect appliances. Without effective earthing, homes may experience power leakages, fluctuations, and increased energy wastage, which can reflect in higher electricity consumption.

Mr. Obeng advised homeowners and landlords to engage qualified electricians to inspect and correct their wiring systems. He emphasized that ensuring proper earthing not only helps consumers get value for their electricity but also enhances safety by reducing the risk of electric shocks and fire outbreaks.
