Drivers Charging Illegal Fares Are Not Our Members – GPRTU

Story by: Richmond Obeng

The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), has assured the general public and commuters that drivers who charge unapproved fares at various parts of Ghana do not belong to the GPRTU.

Speaking on Kesben Maakye, the Deputy National Communications Officer of GPRTU, Mr. Samuel Amoah claimed that drivers within the union adhere strictly to fares approved in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport. According to Mr. Amoah, contrary to public opinion that all commercial drivers are members of GPRTU, there are several commercial drivers who do not belong to any union. This he said is unlawful and drivers found culpable are likely to face the law.

He said, “all police officers are aware of the LI that states that before any commercial driver can operate, he must be a member of a union but show me how many drivers have been prosecuted so far.”

However, Mr. Amoah commended the government and National Security for deploying a task force to the streets of Accra to arrest drivers who are found charging unauthorized fares. He claimed that GPRTU had already made efforts to bring such drivers to book but their authority is only limited to drivers within their union.

Mr Amoah further urged all commercial drivers an potential drivers to make it a point to join a union or form one in accordance with the law, in order to promote sanity within the commercial transport sector and also to avoid the full wrath of the law.
