Ken Ofori-Atta detained By US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken into custody Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, over matters relating to his current immigration status in the United States.

According to his legal representatives, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB), the detention is linked to routine immigration procedures concerning his stay in the country. In a statement released on Wednesday night, January 7, 2026, the lawyers disclosed that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s US-based legal team is actively engaging with ICE and is confident the issue will be resolved swiftly.

The statement clarified that Mr. Ofori-Atta has an ongoing application for adjustment of status, a legal process that permits an individual to remain in the US beyond the expiration of their visa. The lawyers noted that such applications are common under US immigration law.

They further assured the public that Mr. Ofori-Atta has acted within the law and is fully cooperating with immigration authorities to bring the matter to a prompt conclusion.
