When formal education is pushed at the neglect of informal education, knowledge grows, but behavior suffers – George Akom, educationist

Educationist George Akom has cautioned against overemphasizing formal education at the expense of informal education, warning that such an approach leads to knowledge growth without corresponding moral and behavioral development.
According to Mr. Akom, while formal education equips individuals with academic knowledge and technical skills, informal education, received through the family, community, culture, and social interactions, plays a critical role in shaping character, values, and discipline.
He stressed that when societies prioritize certificates over character, the result is educated individuals who lack respect, empathy, and social responsibility.
He explained that informal education instills virtues such as honesty, respect for elders, communal living, and accountability, which are essential for national development.
