Responsible Cooperative Mining Program Gains Momentum in Ahanta West

The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Program (RCOMSDEP) has made significant strides in promoting sustainable mining practices in Ghana’s Ahanta West Constituency. On Day Two of the program, a team led by the Deputy National Coordinator in charge of Operations visited several mining sites to assess the viability of cooperative mining.
The team, which included the Head of Mining and Geologist and the Head of Communications, visited communities and sites at Friti, Mmaa Mp3 Hia, Adwumako Patase, Bɔdwen, and Camp 3. During the visit, the Deputy National Coordinator emphasized the importance of responsible and cooperative mining, highlighting RCOMSDEP’s goal of promoting sustainable practices that protect the environment, improve livelihoods, and empower local miners.
“The goal of RCOMSDEP is to promote sustainable mining practices that protect the environment, improve livelihoods, and empower local miners through skills development and formalized cooperative structures,” he stated. He encouraged miners to embrace the initiative, assuring them of the program’s commitment to transparency, safety, and community development.
The communities welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, joining the team in visiting the various sites and engaging in discussions. RCOMSDEP extends its gratitude to the Member of Parliament (MP) and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for their warm hospitality and cordial reception, which contributed to the success of the visit.
The program aims to formalize artisanal mining, improve safety standards, and create economic opportunities for local communities. By promoting cooperative mining, RCOMSDEP seeks to reduce environmental degradation and enhance the livelihoods of miners.
RCOMSDEP Director of Communication, Mr. John Afful, stated that the program is committed to supporting miners in adopting sustainable practices. “We are working to create a model for responsible mining that benefits both the environment and the communities involved,” he said.
The National Deputy Coordinator In Charge of Operations praised Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, for his efforts, dedication, commitment, and determination to ensure the government’s flagship program achieves sustainable development and growth in the mining sector.
The visit marked a significant milestone in RCOMSDEP’s efforts to promote responsible mining practices in Ghana. The program’s success is expected to contribute to the country’s economic development and environmental sustainability.
As RCOMSDEP continues its work in Ahanta West, stakeholders anticipate a positive impact on the lives of miners and the environment. The program’s focus on skills development and cooperative structures is expected to empower local miners, promoting a culture of sustainability and responsibility. With the support of local authorities and communities, RCOMSDEP is poised to make a lasting difference in Ghana’s mining sector.
