President Mahama Calls for Economic Independence for Africa, Says Global Order “Rigged Against” the Continent

President John Dramani Mahama has called on African leaders to champion a new era of economic liberation for the continent, stressing that the current generation carries the responsibility of transforming Africa’s resources into prosperity for its people.

Speaking during a solidarity message on the occasion of Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day, President Mahama said Africa can no longer be content with political freedom alone when economic systems continue to undermine the continent’s progress.

“It is the responsibility of our current generation of African leadership to win economic independence and prosperity for our people,” he said.

According to President Mahama, Africa continues to be disadvantaged on the global stage due to entrenched structures that prevent the continent from fully benefiting from its natural resources.

“Africa faces many challenges, including a global order that is rigged against it,” President Mahama noted. “We operate within trade systems that make us suppliers of unprocessed raw materials and importers of finished products. This must change.”

He emphasized the urgent need for African economies to shift from exporting raw commodities to adding value domestically, arguing that such a transition is critical to job creation, industrial growth, and long-term sustainability.

“The time has come for us to add value to Africa’s exports,” he stressed, calling on governments to invest in industrialization, accountable governance, and youth-driven innovation.

President Mahama further stated that Africa’s future prosperity depends on transparent leadership, regional cooperation, and a fairer share of the wealth derived from the continent’s abundant resources.
