Dr Richard Anane says NPP’s early primaries give Bawumia an unfair advantage

Former Health Minister and ex-MP for Nhyiaeso, Dr Richard Anane, has expressed concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primaries early, asserting that the timeline gives Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a significant advantage over other aspirants.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV, he weighed in on the internal dynamics shaping the run-up to the NPP’s January 2026 primaries.

According to Dr Anane, holding the primaries less than a year after the December 2024 general election allows Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, to capitalise on his existing nationwide visibility and extensive grassroots engagements. “It’s been less than a year since the general election, and Bawumia has already had more interactions with electorates across the country than any other candidate,” he said, suggesting that this prolonged exposure could skew delegate perceptions in Bawumia’s favour.

Dr Anane’s critique taps into broader conversations within the party about fairness and the need for a level playing field among aspirants. Other voices in the NPP have similarly called for equitable engagement opportunities for all contenders during the nomination period.

The early primaries schedule, set for January 31, 2026, was defended by party leadership as a strategic move to give the eventual flagbearer ample time to lead the party into the 2028 general election.
