President Mahama Launches Ghana-Made STEM Box Initiative, Champions Practical Science Education

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Ghana-made STEM Box Initiative, a locally designed and engineered educational innovation aimed at strengthening foundational science and technology learning among primary school pupils.
The initiative, developed by young Ghanaian innovators from Dex Technologies, will be deployed to Primary Four, Five and Six pupils across the country. Speaking at the launch ceremony on Thursday, 4th December, 2025, Mahama described the project as “a visionary effort, designed, engineered and produced by our own people right here in Ghana.”
According to him, the introduction of practical learning tools at the basic level will significantly enhance Ghana’s long-term science and technology competence.
“I believe that it will strengthen their knowledge of STEM, then it makes it easier for them to go into the science and technology courses when they progress into secondary education,” Mahama said.
He praised Dex Technologies for their innovation and international recognition, highlighting the company’s fulfillment of a major order from the United Kingdom.
“I was especially proud when Mr. Atim said that they had received and fulfilled an order to send STEM boxes to 500 schools in the UK. That is no mean achievement,” he noted.
“STEM Is Not Optional”
Mahama emphasized the global relevance of STEM education, noting that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, renewable energy and space technology require a new approach to learning.
“In this new world, STEM is not optional. It is the foundation upon which resilient economies, innovative industries and forward-looking societies are built.”
He cited global examples—such as Finland, Japan, Singapore and South Korea—as proof that early exposure to hands-on STEM learning can produce transformative outcomes.
Locally Built Learning Tools for Ghanaian Children
Mahama stressed that the STEM boxes are more than instructional kits—they are gateways to exploration and innovation.
“The STEM boxes we are launching today are far more than just learning tools. They are the gateway to exploration, discovery and invention.”
“In the past, we would just teach the children, and they would learn it by rote. This practical solution makes the child understand how digestion occurs.”
He highlighted the absence of fully equipped science laboratories, especially in rural areas, and said the new tools help bridge the practical learning gap.
Supporting Local Industry
Mahama noted that the initiative supports domestic manufacturing and aligns with national objectives of strengthening foundational learning, digital literacy, and future career readiness.
“By producing these STEM boxes here in Ghana, we’re not only supporting education. We’re also strengthening local manufacturing, creating jobs, and signaling to the world that Ghana is capable of designing and producing its own solutions.”
A Call to Teachers and Stakeholders
Addressing teachers across the country, he affirmed their central role in shaping the next generation of scientists and innovators.
“With your guidance, a child building a simple electric circuit today will become an electrical engineer tomorrow. A young girl experimenting with energy may become one of Africa’s leading scientists in the future.”
He urged educators and parents to foster curiosity and embrace the mistakes that drive innovation.
“Let our schools become spaces where curiosity is celebrated, where learning is joyful, and where every child believes they can become a creator of tomorrow’s solutions.”
Officially Launched
Concluding his speech, Mahama expressed confidence in the initiative’s potential to shape a future-ready Ghana.
“We are igniting curiosity, nurturing creativity, and laying the foundations for a generation that will lead Ghana into a new era of technological advancement.”
He then formally declared the initiative launched:
“With the mandate of the people and in devotion to the future of our dear children, I hereby have the honor and privilege to declare the Ghana-made STEM Box Initiative officially launched.”
