Social Media distraction affecting students of today –  George Akom Reacts to poor 2025 WASSCE results

Educationist and governance analyst George Akom has expressed deep concern over what he describes as the growing negative influence of social media on students’ academic performance. His comments follow widespread discussions about the poor performance recorded in the 2025 WASSCE results, which many observers say reflect a troubling decline in focus and discipline among young learners.

According to Akom, the modern student is constantly exposed to digital distractions that compete heavily with academic responsibilities.

He lamented that even during examinations, some students are preoccupied with social media fantasies rather than their papers.

“A student may be sitting for an exam and will be thinking about the picture he will snap and post after the exams,” he remarked, stressing that this mindset is a clear sign of misplaced priorities.

Akom explained that while social media can serve educational purposes, its misuse has become a major hindrance to learning. Students, he said, are investing more time in online trends, entertainment, and peer validation than in studying and building critical thinking skills.

He called on parents, teachers, and policymakers to work together to guide students on responsible digital usage. Strengthening digital literacy programs, he added, will help learners understand the difference between using technology productively and falling victim to unhealthy habits.
