Wioso Senior High School Celebrates 10th Anniversary, Appeals for Urgent Infrastructural Support

Wioso Senior High School (Alma Mater Education), a rural-based institution established by the Toni Gann Foundation, has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a renewed call for urgent government and stakeholder support to address long-standing infrastructural challenges hindering effective teaching and learning.
The school, located in the Ahafo Ano South-West District of the Ashanti Region, has over the years struggled with limited resources such as inadequate classrooms, lack of a science laboratory, insufficient teaching materials, and the absence of essential facilities including teachers’ accommodation and a school bus. These challenges continue to place both teachers and students at a disadvantage, especially in practical science education and research.
Speaking during the anniversary celebration, the Director of External Relations and Special Projects, Mr. Dennis Oduro Akomeah, lamented the inadequate support the school has received over the years. He said the lack of basic infrastructure has made the delivery of quality education increasingly difficult.
“Without a science laboratory and with overcrowded classrooms, our students are unable to fully engage in practical learning. These conditions undermine the efforts of our hardworking teachers and affect students’ academic performance,” he stressed. He however expressed gratitude to the government for initiating the process of absorbing the school into the public education system.
In a keynote address, the District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South-West, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, conveyed warm greetings from the Ahafo Ano South-West District Assembly and described the occasion as a significant milestone worth celebrating.
He commended the Toni Gann Foundation, the school’s management, staff, and the chiefs and people of Wioso for their continuous dedication to promoting rural education.
The DCE revealed that following a visit by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, on 29th May 2025, the Ministry of Education had officially approved the absorption of Wioso Senior High School into the public school system alongside five other private schools.
“Once the final documentation is completed, 49 teaching and non-teaching staff will be placed on the government payroll. This will greatly strengthen the human resource base of the school and ensure its long-term sustainability,” he announced.
Hon. Sedik further disclosed that he had personally appealed to the Minister of Education for the provision of a school bus and teachers’ quarters to improve staff welfare and student mobility. He encouraged students to remain focused and take advantage of the opportunities now available to them.
The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South-West, Hon. Elvis Dapaah, who also graced the event, donated 10 laptops to the school to support the establishment of a science laboratory. He praised the founders and partners—especially the expatriate philanthropists—who established the school and expressed delight over the school’s steady growth within just a decade.
“The student population keeps increasing every year, which shows the trust the community has in the school. I urge every resident of this area to give their full support to this institution,” the MP stated.
He further commended the chiefs for their continuous support and admonished community members not to politicize government flagship programs that are designed to improve development in the constituency. The MP added that he is working closely with traditional leaders to prioritize developmental projects that benefit the youth and the entire Ahafo Ano South-West enclave.
The anniversary celebration brought together chiefs, parents, education stakeholders, partners, and past students, all of whom pledged to continue supporting the school’s growth.
As Wioso Senior High School marks 10 years of existence, management and stakeholders remain hopeful that the next decade will see improved infrastructure, stronger partnerships, and greater opportunities that will enhance quality education in the community.
