Gov’t buying printers for EOCO does not mean President Mahama is weaponizing EOCO – Dr Smart Sarpong

Renowned policy analyst and researcher, Dr Smart Sarpong, has dismissed claims that the government’s decision to procure printers for the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is part of a political agenda by President John Dramani Mahama to “weaponize” the institution.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, Dr Sarpong explained that equipping EOCO with the necessary logistics and tools to enhance its operations should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to use the agency for political purposes.

“Government buying printers or any other equipment for EOCO does not mean President Mahama is weaponizing the office,” he stated. “Every government has a responsibility to provide the resources state institutions need to function effectively.”

According to Dr Sarpong, resourcing investigative and enforcement institutions like EOCO is a normal part of public administration and should be welcomed, provided it is done transparently and within procurement regulations.

He cautioned against the growing tendency to politicize routine government actions, stressing that such narratives only weaken public confidence in state institutions.
