Ghana Celebrates 60 Years of Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty and Stability

The Bank of Ghana marked its 60th anniversary with a national celebration, launching the Cedi@60 initiative, a year-long national engagement commemorating six decades of the national currency, the Cedi. The event, held in Accra, brought together key stakeholders, including the Vice President and the Finance Minister, to discuss the currency’s progress and future prospects.
Vice President’s Remarks
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang commended the Bank for its efforts in stabilizing the Cedi. She urged deeper collaboration with commercial banks and the business community to sustain the gains, emphasizing that “strong monetary policy must be supported by sound fiscal discipline.” She also called on the Ministry of Finance to uphold strict fiscal responsibility.
Finance Minister’s Plea
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson urged citizens to protect and promote the use of the Ghana Cedi, reminding the public that it remains the country’s only legal tender. He cautioned against pricing goods and services in foreign currencies, especially the US dollar, saying such practices undermine the Cedi’s value. Dr. Forson described the Cedi’s 60th anniversary as a “new dawn” for economic sovereignty and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline to sustain the currency’s stability.
Bank of Ghana Governor’s Comments
Speaking at the event, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, said the country has made significant progress in restoring economic stability. “The economy has turned a decisive corner,” he noted, attributing the gains to disciplined and sound economic management. Dr. Asiama highlighted that inflation has eased and the Cedi has appreciated by 37 percent as of mid-October 2025. He assured that the Bank remains committed to maintaining price stability and strengthening confidence in the economy through prudent and forward-looking policies.
A Milestone Celebrated
The 60th anniversary of the Ghana Cedi is a significant milestone, marking six decades of the currency’s existence. The celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of economic stability and the role of the Bank of Ghana in maintaining confidence in the economy. As Ghana looks to the future, the government and citizens alike are urged to work together to ensure the continued stability and growth of the economy.
