Why has marriage become a deathtrap? Selfishness is the major cause – Rev. Vincent Kankam hits hard on “Kwaku Ananse characters” in Relationships & Marriages

Reverend Vincent Kankam has described the modern institution of marriage as increasingly becoming a “deathtrap” due to rising levels of selfishness between partners.
Speaking on Kessben FM’s Food, Rev. Kankam lamented the breakdown of mutual respect, sacrifice, and selflessness in many modern marriages. According to him, the foundational values that once held families together are eroding, being replaced by individualism and personal gain.
“Marriage was designed to be a blessing, a covenant of companionship,” he explained. “But today, people enter marriage with their own agendas. It’s about what they can take, not what they can give. That’s why many homes are breaking down, and sadly, some even turn dangerous.”
He cited cases of emotional, physical, and psychological abuse in homes, pointing out that these often stem from partners prioritizing their own desires over the health of the relationship.
Rev. Kankam emphasized that without humility, communication, and mutual sacrifice, marriage can quickly shift from a place of peace to one of pain. “Love cannot survive where selfishness reigns,” he added.
