Top Phone dealer in Kumasi ‘Ras Ponpo’ reveals how stolen phones are brought to the market

A senior phone dealer in Kumasi, widely known in Kumasi PZ as Ras Ponpo, told listeners on Kessben FM during a conversation with host Fante Quoo that stolen mobile phones are often brought to legitimate shops with a claim: the device is locked and the owner asks the dealer to unlock it.

According to Ras, when dealers refuse or say they cannot remove the lock, the sellers sometimes return later and offer the same phones for sale.

PZ described the pattern as a practical way thieves and middlemen test the market. “They come and say there’s a lock, asking if we can unlock it,” he said on air. “If we refuse, they tell us to buy the phone instead.” The dealer warned this makes it easier for stolen devices to be circulated through regular sales channels.
