Benjamin Nsiah commends GRA & National Security for their efforts in recent arrests of individuals diverting products to evade taxes

Benjamin Nsiah, the Executive Director Center of Environmental and Sustainable Energy, shares his thoughts about the smuggling of petroleum products by some oil marketing companies (OMC’s).

Speaking on Kessben Maakye show with Kojo preko Dankwah in Accra, Benjamin Nsiah mentioned that it was reported yesterday that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has arrested some companies, specifically BIDAEC , which are known for importing products from Foreign countries into Ghana.

He stated that after importing, they sometimes sell the products to OMCs and export some to the neighboring countries.

He claims that, considering most of our tax issues, it appears that BIDAEC is heavily involved. He explained that BIDAEC’s cannot operate without the involvement of OMCs and tanker driving companies because most BIDAEC’s lack vehicles and as a result, they require OMC’s to act as offtakers in Ghana when diverting products.

He stated that, He appreciates GRA and National Security for their efforts in the recent arrest of individuals diverting products to evade taxes.

He raised that that’s exactly how the system is exploited, as the BIDAEC can export products to Burkina Faso,He doesn’t pay the taxes he’s supposed to . And they divert the products with the help of some GRA or MPA officials selling to OMC’s without paying the required taxes, which allows them to offer lower prices than others.
