President Mahama Unveils Ambitious Four-Point Digital Strategy to Position Ghana as West African Tech Hub

President John Dramani Mahama has announced technological initiatives designed to transform the nation into a modern, secure digital economy while addressing cybersecurity challenges head-on.

“Ghana is not immune. We too have encountered cyber fraud cases, phishing attacks, identity theft and other digital crimes that harm individuals and businesses alike,” President Mahama acknowledged, setting the stage for his administration’s robust response to digital security concerns.

Speaking during the Cybersecurity Awareness Month launch today October 1,2025 at the Burma Camp ,The President emphasized that digital transformation sits at the heart of his administration’s national development strategy. “Under the reset Ghana agenda, my administration has prioritized digital transformation as a key part of our national development policy, and cyber security is at the core of that transformation,” he declared.

Reflecting on his campaign promises, President Mahama stated: “When I took office in January this year, I promised the Ghanaian people that will develop a modern, inclusive and secure digital economy. That promise continues to guide my work today.”

The President outlined four transformative programs already in progress:

1. The 1 Million Coders Program

“I launched this program in April of this year. This initiative aims to train 1 million young Ghanaians in digital skills, including coding, software engineering, data analytics and cyber security,” President Mahama announced. “Already pilot projects in Greater Accra Ashanti Bono and Upper East region are equipping 1000s of our youth with tools that prepare them, not just for jobs today, but jobs of the future.”

2. Data Jobs Initiative

“This is a public, private partnership aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunity through technology, we’re establishing regional digital centers for business process outsourcing and ICT parks to promote innovation, innovation in artificial intelligence, cyber security and digital entrepreneurship,” the President explained. A cornerstone of this initiative includes “the redevelopment of the Dawa ICT park into a global center of excellence”.

3. FinTech Growth Fund

President Mahama revealed significant financial backing for local innovation: “We’ve set aside $50 million to support indigenous startups and foster a vibrant Digital finance ecosystem. One Ghanaian innovators to develop solutions for Ghanaian challenges and also expand expand them across Africa”.

4. The 24-Hour Economy Initiative

“Beyond being a job creation strategy, this initiative is also about digital resilience. A 24 hour economy means round the clock operations. It requires secure systems, constant monitoring and robot cyber security protocols to ensure that businesses, banks, hospitals, and public services function without disruption, day or night,” President Mahama emphasized.

The comprehensive strategy addresses both immediate employment needs and long-term economic sustainability. By focusing on cybersecurity as a foundational element, Ghana aims to build trust in its digital infrastructure while expanding mobile money usage and digital public services.

The initiatives represent a significant investment in human capital development, with particular emphasis on preparing Ghana’s youth for the digital economy of the future. The regional approach, spanning Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, and Upper East regions, ensures nationwide participation in the digital transformation.

As Ghana positions itself as a technological leader in West Africa, these initiatives signal a strategic shift toward innovation-driven economic growth. The integration of cybersecurity, skills development, infrastructure building, and startup funding creates a comprehensive ecosystem designed to support sustainable digital transformation.
