Government Commits to Revitalizing Metro Mass Transit Limited, Says Transport Minister

The Government of Ghana has announced its commitment to revitalizing Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, both of which are currently facing financial distress.
Speaking about the government’s plans during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday 17th September, 2025, Transport Minister Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated, the government is committed to revitalizing Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, which are currently in distress and need urgent financial support.
The Minister outlined comprehensive modernization plans that include fleet upgrades and infrastructure improvements. “We plan to modernize their fleet and upgrade existing infrastructure for efficient service delivery,” Hon. Nikpe explained.
The revitalization program includes a significant fleet expansion for Metro Mass Transit Limited. According to the Transport Minister, “The MMTL fleet will include 350 Toyota Hiace buses, 100 coastal buses, and 50 cargo and parcel trucks.”
The Minister indicated that the implementation timeline is already set, noting that “deliveries will commence at the end of this year through early 2026.”
The government’s commitment extends beyond MMTL to include Intercity STC Coaches Limited. Hon. Nikpe revealed that “arrangements are underway to modernize Intercity STC fleets in phases, including the introduction of electronic buses for their operations.”
This comprehensive approach demonstrates the government’s dedication to transforming Ghana’s public transportation sector and ensuring reliable, modern transit services for citizens across the country.
The revitalization initiative is expected to significantly improve public transportation services while providing much-needed financial stability to these critical transport companies.
