Farmers in arms as illegal sand winners destroy farmlands in Kokofu-Essiase

Farmers at Kokofu in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region are calling on government and the Inspector general of Police (IGP) and the Ghana police service Security to begin an operation to flush out illegal sand winners who are destroying agricultural lands in the area.

The activities of the illegal sand winners operating in Kokofu- Essiase community in the Bekwai district have led to the destruction of so many acres of arable lands.

The perpetrators who operate at day and night have managed to destroy yam, Plantation, and other farm crops.

The situation on the ground is very worrying, as lands that can be used for agricultural purposes have been destroyed by the illegal sand miners.

According to information gathered by Kessben News, lands in the areas are released to sand winners by some chiefs and are placed under the protection of land guards.

It is acknowledged that they went about their activities boldly because they had the backing of some chiefs in the affected towns.

Speaking at a press conference, Samuel Agyei, The youth leader at Kokofu- Essiase said, they demand the immediate halt of all illegal sand winning in the community.

He strongly criticised the activities of sand winners in the area who destroyed farm crops and lands without any compensation to the owners.

Some community-affected farmers at Kokofu -Essiase recounted their losses and therefore called on authorities to intervene to avoid this menace
