NLA Rolls Out Sticker System to Regulate Lottery Industry

By: John Awuni

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has launched a new initiative to regulate Ghana’s lottery industry by introducing a sticker system to identify licensed lottery ticket sellers. This move aims to boost revenue generation, ensure efficiency, and protect the integrity of the industry.

The NLA will introduce a sticker system on September 1, 2025, to distinguish legitimate sellers from unlicensed operators. According to Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Acting CEO of NLA, “The sticker system will provide transparency and accountability in the lottery space. This reform will not only protect the integrity of the industry but also ensure that revenues are properly accounted for and used for national development.”

The authority is intensifying its regulatory oversight to ensure only legally recognized agents operate in the industry. Abdul-Salam emphasized that the NLA is embarking on a nationwide exercise to ensure those serving NLA customers are doing so legitimately.

The Concerned Lotto Agents Association of Ghana (CLAAG) has welcomed the initiative, with Executive Secretary Kwaku Duah Tawiah saying, “The battle is over. Now is the time to act.” CLAAG urges its members to cooperate with the NLA and desist from engaging unregistered operators.

Over the next two months, the NLA and CLAAG will conduct stakeholder engagements and field monitoring to ensure full adherence to the registration and sticker requirements. This initiative is expected to bring transparency, improve compliance, and boost government revenue from the sector.
