Galamsey Fight: The fact that there are road accidents doesn’t mean we should ban cars from driving on road, Regulating is the way – Nana Biribireba

Nana Biribireba, the CEO of Crystal Mining, has drawn a powerful analogy in defense of responsible small-scale mining amid the ongoing fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

Addressing the challenges and criticisms faced by the mining industry on Kessben TV’s Adwenkyere, Nana Biribireba argued that completely banning mining due to the environmental damage caused by illegal operators is not the solution. He stated.

“The fact that there are road accidents doesn’t mean we should ban cars from driving on roads. There must be regulations, enforcement, and responsibility, not a total shutdown of an industry that provides livelihoods to thousands.”

While some have called for stricter crackdowns, including a complete halt to all small-scale mining, Nana Biribireba insists that a balanced, regulated approach is more sustainable.

He urged stakeholders to invest more in monitoring systems, community education, and the empowerment of local miners to transition from illegal operations to legal, sustainable practices.
