NPP Withdrawing from the Tamale Central By-Election: They know it’s not a safe seat, and it’s a smart decision from them – Hon Akuoko Frimpong

Hon. Akuoko Frimpong, former District Chief Executive for Sekyere Central, described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to withdraw from the Tamale Central by-election as “smart” and strategically sound.
Speaking on Kessben FM, he asserted, “They know that it’s not a safe seat for them and it’s a smart decision from them.”
The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of the sitting MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who perished in the Adansi Akrofuom military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025
General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong described the decision as guided by the party’s constitution and respect for national sentiment, stating that it would be “inhumane and unconscionable” to press ahead with a political contest under current circumstances
While NPP leadership framed the withdrawal as a mark of respect and solidarity during mourning, not all observers believe it was devoid of political calculation.
Hon. Akuoko Frimpong echoed this strategic perspective, suggesting the party recognized Tamale Central as a traditional NDC stronghold and deemed the financial and political investment unjustifiable given the low likelihood of victory.
