President Mahama Cracks Down on Double-Paid Contractors in Infrastructure Audit

President of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure development initiative aimed at addressing Ghana’s critical infrastructure challenges, while simultaneously cracking down on contractor fraud.

He underscored the “Big Push” initiative aims to tackle Ghana’s significant infrastructure deficit by investing $10 billion.

Speaking during his Eastern Regional “ Thank you Tour” today 20th July, 2025 in Koforidua, President Mahama revealed the government’s ambitious plan to tackle the country’s massive infrastructure deficit. “We face an infrastructure deficit of $1.5 billion every year,” Mahama stated. “We need to invest that amount annually in roads, hospitals, and other critical sectors to unlock Ghana’s full development potential.”

Funding and Strategy:

The initiative will leverage revenues from Ghana’s oil, gas, and minerals exports, demonstrating a strategic approach to national development. “With the Big Push, we will construct roads and other vital infrastructures,” President Mahama emphasized.

Contractor Accountability :

In a stern warning to contractors, Mahama announced a comprehensive audit to eliminate financial irregularities. “Contractors who receive double payment for road projects will face punishment,” he declared. The government has temporarily suspended ongoing road works to conduct a full audit, ensuring only legitimate contractors return to project sites.

According to the President, an audit by the Auditor General disclosed multiple instances of contractors being paid more than one for one projects. “Only those cleared by the audit will be allowed back on site, whilst those found culpable will be sanctioned,” Mahama emphasized.

The “Big Push” promises infrastructure development across all regions, with Mahama assuring, “All regions, including the Eastern region, will receive their share of projects.”

“We are responding to the chiefs’ complaints about bad roads and bringing a comprehensive solution to our infrastructure needs.” – President John Dramani Mahama.

This comprehensive strategy signals the government’s commitment to transparent infrastructure development and economic growth.
