NPP’s Former General Secretary Speaks Out on Electoral College Expansion

Ing Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a passionate appeal to the party’s delegates attending the Annual Conference. In an open letter, Agyepong expresses his gratitude to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) for adopting most of the constitutional reforms he proposed. However, he strongly objects to the exclusion of past electoral area coordinators and polling station executives from the proposed electoral college expansion.
A Call for Inclusivity
Agyepong emphasizes that polling stations are the backbone of the party, where campaigns are launched, and volunteerism is fostered. He argues that excluding these grassroots executives from the electoral college is a “gross injustice” that undermines the party’s spirit of inclusiveness and unity. The former General Secretary urges all patriots, especially constituency executives, to advocate for the inclusion of past ward/polling station executives and electoral area coordinators in the electoral college.
Concerns about Manipulation
Agyepong questions the criteria used to select the two extra polling station executives and four electoral area delegates, expressing concerns about potential manipulation and confusion. He calls for transparency and fairness in the party’s decision-making processes.
Building a Party that Recognizes Every Contribution
The NPP’s former General Secretary concludes by emphasizing the importance of building a party that recognizes and values the contributions of all its members, from those who lift flags to those who knock on doors. He urges the party to prioritize equity, inclusivity, and fairness in its decision-making processes.
A Step Forward, But Not Far Enough
Agyepong’s letter highlights the need for the NPP to take a more inclusive approach to its electoral college expansion. By recognizing the contributions of grassroots executives, the party can promote a more equitable and democratic decision-making process. The outcome of this debate will likely have significant implications for the party’s future direction and unity.
