NPP’s Early Primaries: It will be a case of ‘scratch my back, I scratch yours – Dr Oppong Peprah

Renowned political analyst and academic, Dr. Oppong Peprah, weighed in on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal politics.

Speaking during a political discourse on Kessben FM, Dr. Peprah warned that the party’s early primaries, scheduled for January 2026, could evolve into a classic case of “scratch my back, I scratch yours.”

According to Dr. Peprah, the party executives and delegates who will have the power to vote in the primaries are likely to wield that power not purely on merit or loyalty to the party, but strategically, to secure future favors from those who eventually get appointed into positions of power.

His comments shed light on the behind-the-scenes deals that often define internal party politics, particularly in ruling parties where control of parliamentary seats often means direct access to national resources and appointments. In Dr. Peprah’s view, loyalty in this context becomes transactional rather than ideological.

Dr. Peprah pointed out that many party executives, especially at the constituency level, see the primaries as their main opportunity to ‘cash in’ politically.

This prediction feeds into broader concerns about the commercialization of internal party elections, where political support is often exchanged for promises of contracts, jobs, or access once the party secures or retains power.

Dr. Peprah cautioned that this form of transactional politics may undermine the integrity of the primary process and potentially create factions within the party, particularly if promises made during the primaries are not fulfilled after appointments are made.
