President Mahama outlines plans to establish new public university in Savannah Region

President of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of education in national progress, stated the NDC 2024 manifesto’s commitment to equalizing access to quality education across regions.

President Mahama announced the establishment of a public university in the Savannah region, focusing on agriculture and allied sciences to support the feed Ghana programme and agriculture for economic transformation.

“I’m proud to announce that in line with the NDC 2024, manifesto to establish a public university in all the six new regions, I’m happy to announce that the public university will be established in the Savannah region. It will be a university whose focus will be on agriculture and the Allied sciences. This university will train the human resource necessary to drive our feed Ghana program and agriculture for economic transformation agenda.” President Mahama stated.

According to him, the university is intended to be grounded in the national agenda for skills-driven development and aligned with the national education expansion framework and the 2025 budget, which allocates increased funding for tertiary infrastructure in deprived regions.

H.E John Dramani Mahama said this today , Saturday 14th June ,2025 during his ‘Thank you Tour ‘ in the Savannah Region .

Additional Educational Initiatives:

President Mahama further announced the establishment of a STEM Senior High School in Tinga, Bole District, and a TVET Center of Excellence in Salaga to provide vocational training in ICT, construction, green technologies, and agribusiness.

“Additionally, I have asked the Ministry of Education to establish a stem Senior High School in Tinga in the bole district, and to set up a TVET Center of Excellence in Salaga. This will provide hands on vocational training in ICT, construction, green technologies and agribusiness to support teacher development.” He stressed.

He also revealed that, The Savannah College of Education in Daboya, previously a private community initiative, has been officially absorbed as a public teacher training institution.

He has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and GET Fund to fast-track the recruitment of staff and infrastructure development at the Savannah College of Education.

“I’m pleased to announce that the Savannah College of Education in Daboya, which was previously a private community initiative, has now been officially absorbed as a public teacher training institution. I have directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and get fund to fast track the recruitment of staff and infrastructure development in the school.” President Mahama said.

He also assured that, work on the abandoned College of Education at Doli near Bole, which was initiated under his previous administration, will resume this year.
