NDC Gang of Four On Rampage At Kejetia Market…Snubs Directive From Mayor, Management

Story By Michael Ofosu-Afriyie, Kumasi

Some known footsoldiers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with links to the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Augustus Nana Akwasi are making the work of the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi difficult.

Same persons, this reporter is reliably informed have also rendered the management of the Kejetia Market ineffective with their negative escapades.

With funny names like “Dakoro P3, Kofi NDC, Charles and Prince Nyarko, these four assigns to the regional Chairman are currently putting up unauthorised wholesale lockers and sheds at the garbage 🗑 and waste rooms at the Kejetia “Dubai” market.

The waste room as the name denotes, has been officially designated for trucks to access and carry waste items generated at the market to dumping sites.

Defiance:
Readers would recall that exactly two weeks ago, the Mayor for Kumasi at a meeting with stakeholders at the market including management asked that the ongoing construction be halted forthwith.

However, three days later a source hinted this reporter that the four assigns have commenced work at the garbage 🗑 room despite the order to halt same.

Visiting the place, this reporter found a four course concrete construction 🚧 at the site and on top of it were mounted some steel-like containers and sheds as well as lockers.

Speaking to one Mr Ankrah, leader of the Cocerned Kejetia Traders Association on site, he expressed worry about the situation and reiterated that the Mayor had ordered for a halt to the construction.

Reactions:
Meanwhile, speaking to yours truly during a second visit to the waste room, Prince Nyarko, who is officially the operations manager of the Kejetia Market conceded that the Mayor had halted the project a week before my visit.

He however explained that management was trying to convert certain portions of the waste room for some traders who take delivery of large volume of items daily at the market.

Mayor’s Efforts:
Despite being in office for barely two months now, Hon Richard Ofori Agyemang has in modest manners started some initiatives to make the Central Business District (CBD) and the entire metropolis clean, regulated and functional.

He has so far ensured that hawkers that plied their activities at the Kumasi Cultural centre and other busy streets in the CBD are highly regulated.

The Mayor has also began a periodic clean up exercise in the metropolis.

On Monday, he ordered the task force of the KMA to ensure drivers charge the requisite fares following the announced reduction from the national driver unions and government.

Kejetia Management:
Currently, Ernest Afayam, an old student of Kumasi High School has been appointed as Manager of the Kejetia City Market Limited (KCML).

He takes over from Prince Ofori-Atta, a law student and former graduate from the Christian Service University (CSU).

Mr Ofori-Atta, has since the appointment of Mr Afayam been handed a deputy managerial position for the Market.

These two, despite being highly qualified and educated to manage the market are facing the onslaught of the aforementioned footsoldiers who have so far rendered them helpless to deal with issues at the market.
