Refusal to reduce fares: If things do not change, these drivers will continue to act with impunity, especially the “Wawaa Drivers” – Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD)

Kwabena Owusu Dankwah, co-host of Kessben FM’s Makye morning show, has raised concerns over the persistent non-compliance of some commercial drivers with the recent 15% transport fare reduction. During a live broadcast, he warned that if the situation remains unchecked, certain drivers may continue to exploit passengers with impunity.
The fare reduction, announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), aimed to alleviate the financial burden on commuters following a decline in fuel prices. However, reports from various regions indicate that many drivers have failed to implement the new fare structure, citing reasons such as increased costs of spare parts and vehicle maintenance.
Kwabena Owusu Dankwah emphasized that while the economic challenges faced by drivers are valid, they do not justify the arbitrary hike in fares. He called on the relevant authorities to enforce the fare regulations strictly and hold non-compliant drivers accountable. He also urged passengers to report any instances of overcharging to the appropriate channels to ensure fair treatment for all.
The persistent fare discrepancies have led to public outcry, with commuters expressing frustration over the lack of enforcement. Many passengers have reported being charged higher fares than those stipulated, leading to disputes and a breakdown in trust between drivers and passengers.
In response to these concerns, the GPRTU has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the fare reduction is implemented across the country. The union has called on its members to adhere to the new fare structure and has pledged to take disciplinary action against any driver found violating the regulations.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the combined efforts of the GPRTU, regulatory authorities, and the public will lead to a resolution that ensures fair and affordable transportation for all commuters.
