NADMO Is Not Only About Post-Disaster Relief, We’re Also Focused on Prevention and Public Safety – Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, Ashanti Regional Director

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, has clarified that NADMO’s mandate extends far beyond responding to disasters after they occur. According to him, many Ghanaians hold the misconception that NADMO’s work is limited to compensating disaster victims, but their operations are far more comprehensive.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Alhaji Nasir highlighted that NADMO also engages in preventive and control measures aimed at reducing the risk of disasters. He noted that the organization plays a vital role in several overlooked areas, such as providing support to deported citizens struggling with trauma and ensuring that vehicles are not parked carelessly on roads—a practice that often leads to avoidable accidents.

He revealed that in February and March alone, the Ashanti Region recorded nearly 50 fire outbreaks each day. “What’s worrying,” he stated, “is that many people neglect basic preventive measures such as installing fire extinguishers in their homes or workplaces. These simple steps could go a long way in preventing the escalation of fires.”

As the rainy season approaches, NADMO has begun preparing to mitigate the threat of flooding in Kumasi and surrounding areas. Their proactive plan includes dredging gutters, clearing debris, and weeding areas prone to water blockage. Alhaji Nasir explained that although funding remains a challenge, efforts are underway to secure support from the private sector, as well as government officials, including the Ashanti Regional Minister and the sector head. Some have already pledged assistance.

“If the necessary resources are secured,” he said, “we hope to commence work as early as next week. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the impact of flooding this year.”

He emphasized that NADMO’s efforts won’t end with cleanup activities. After the initial environmental sanitation exercises, strict enforcement of environmental laws will follow to hold individuals and businesses accountable for pollution and illegal dumping.

Alhaji Nasir concluded by calling on the public to support NADMO’s initiatives—particularly by donating equipment and tools that will aid in the campaign. He stressed the need for a collective approach in tackling disaster management, noting that prevention is just as important as response.
