Kodua Eyes Second Term as NPP General Secretary

Story By Michael Ofosu-Afriyie, Kumasi

Justin Frimpong Kodua, the incumbent General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the clearest indication of seeking a second term mandate as General Secretary of the party at a national event.

In a coded language during an address to the party faithful last Wednesday at the party’s national headquarters where the party announced its decision to carry out a nationwide thank you tour, Lawyer Kodua pleaded with the party faithful to forgive the current leadership for any mistakes they may have committed during their first tenure as national executives.

He also promised that the executives having learnt their lessons would do a better job next time.

“Forgive us for the mistakes and disappointments we may have brought to you by the defeat we suffered at the polls in December 2024 but we promise to do better next time”, the General Secretary apologised.

Interpretations:
Having been coy about his decision to either contest or not in several media engagements since January, this latest statement from the NPP General Secretary is seen as an indication of a decision to run for same position he currently holds sway over.

Interestingly, immediately after giving this subtle impression, Lawyer Kodua’s supporters and admirers have gone to town with coinages of his name with others displaying his images all over to announce a second term bid.

On many social media and WhatsApp platforms across Ghana 🇬🇭, there have been a flurry of images of the incumbent General Secretary, with most supporters simply posting the abbreviated coinage of his name “JFK” every where.

Meanwhile, a close source to the GS since January 2025 had indicated to this reporter that Lawyer Kodua was bent on leading efforts to bring reforms into the party rather than seeking a personal mandate.

It is therefore seen that the General Secretary having superintendented over the investigations into the defeat of the party and leading the presentation of the findings by the Ocquaye Committee to the National Executive Council and the National Council of the party, is now settled in his thoughts to seek a second term mandate.

Track Record:
Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua comes into the NPP with a solid track record, having risen from the lower ranks of the NPP to become a deputy regional youth organiser in the Ashanti Region.

He subsequently contested and won his bid to become the substantive Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.

Appointed as the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) CEO during the first term of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017, JFK decided to run as the General Secretary of the NPP in 2022, a bid he won due to his massive popularity in the party.

Credited for superintending over one of the flawless and transparent parliamentary primaries in the NPP, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua is seen as a consummate politician and a fair minded individual.

Traits:
Many in the NPP see Lawyer Kodua as a good listener, a sober minded person and above all a truthful individual.

Calm and without any trait of eccentric behaviour, many party faithful believe such a character was needed to lead the NPP’s intended reforms.

Many in the NPP also see him as having a good plan to rebuild and lead efforts by the party to recapture political power in the next General elections.
