Samba O’Neil can never be above the highly rated Ghana Premier League – Kwame Mekke

Kessben Sports presenter Kwame Mekke has weighed in on the career trajectory of Asante Kotoko’s highly rated defender, Samba O’neil. Mekke asserted that no matter how talented O’Neil or any other player might be, they can never be above the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Mekke’s comments came in the wake of growing discussions surrounding the future of Ghanaian football players who have set their sights on playing abroad. With the increasing desire among local players to secure international contracts, Mekke reminded his audience of the challenges that many of these players face when attempting to transition to foreign leagues. According to him, despite the hype and high expectations surrounding players like Samba O’neil, the Ghana Premier League is still a highly rated competition that offers ample opportunities for players to thrive.

“Samba O’neil, like any player in the GPL, can never be above the league,” Mekke remarked during a recent sports discussion on Kessben Sports with Joe Laka. “What has happened to all those hyped players who left the Ghana League to try their luck abroad? Many of them failed to make an impact and had to come back and play in our league. This should tell you that the Ghana Premier League is highly rated, and it offers a platform for success like no other.”l.

Samba O’Neil has made a name for himself as one of the best central defenders in the GPL, has long been regarded as a player with the potential to take his game abroad. However, Mekke questions whether the hype surrounding players like O’neil is warranted, especially considering the number of players who have made similar moves and returned without much success.

Mekke’s stance reflects a broader sentiment among some Ghanaian football fans, who feel that too many local talents are overlooked or undervalued in favor of foreign leagues. By highlighting the struggles of players who have left the country, Mekke emphasizes that success in football is not just about where you play, but how well you develop and perform in the environment you are in.

In the case of Samba O’neil, Mekke believes that the player has the potential to continue making an impact in the Ghana Premier League and that his focus should be on contributing to Kotoko’s success, rather than chasing the elusive dream of playing abroad. O’neil’s impressive performances in the GPL have solidified his place as one of the league’s top defenders, and Mekke believes that he can continue to thrive in the league without needing to make the leap to foreign shores.
