“I will not ask you to print more money” – President Mahama tells new Governor of BoG, Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwesi Asiama

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of the central bank’s independence while assuring Ghanaians that his administration will not put pressure on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to print money in order to fund government spending.

President Mahama asked the Bank of Ghana to adopt prudent monetary policies in order to restore economic stability in remarks following the swearing-in of Dr. Zakaria Mumuni as First Deputy Governor and Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwesi Asiama as Governor on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

The president emphasized the value of fiscal restraint and cautioned that prior actions had damaged public trust in the nation’s banking system.

“One thing for sure, I am not going to come and ask you to print more money,” Mr Mahama said, cautioning against excessive money printing, which he linked to inflation, rising poverty, and economic instability.

To protect our economy from these risks, we must manage public finances responsibly, follow legal and regulatory guidelines, and safeguard the independence of the Bank of Ghana,” he said.
