Burkina Faso’s Export Ban on Grains and Cereals: A Heads-Up for Ghanaian Traders

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has issued a public announcement regarding Burkina Faso’s ban on the export of grains and cereals, including rice, millet, maize, sorghum, and white beans. This ban, which was first announced in December 2023, is still in place, and Ghanaian traders and businesses are advised to take note.

According to the ministry, the Government of Burkina Faso has reminded buyers of grains and cereals from that country that the ban is still in effect. This means that any attempts to import these commodities from Burkina Faso may result in sanctions and cessations.

Ghanaian traders and businesses engaged in the importation of grains and cereals from Burkina Faso are urged to comply with this directive to avoid any potential consequences. The ministry is also calling on all affected stakeholders to be guided by this development.

It’s worth noting that Ghana has faced its own challenges in the grain and cereal market. In 2024, the country experienced drought-induced crop failures and low yields in several regions, leading to a temporary ban on exports of key grains, including corn and rice.
