Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) Launches Valentine’s Day Awareness Campaign

As Ghana prepares to celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to remind the public, especially the youth, to prioritize their health and well-being.
According to GHANET, the current HIV statistics in Ghana are alarming, with an estimated 334,000 persons living with HIV as of December 2023. Additionally, 35,460 new cases were recorded between January and September 2024.
Mr. Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, President of GHANET, emphasized the importance of responsible behavior during the Valentine’s Day celebrations. “We acknowledge that love and intimacy are essential aspects of human connection, but they must be expressed with utmost responsibility and self-awareness,” he said.
GHANET is advising the youth to avoid risky sexual behaviors, practice safe sex by using condoms consistently and correctly, and abstain from sex if conditions are not right.
The network is also encouraging the public to test and know their HIV status, with options for HIV Self Testing (HIVST) kits for those concerned about privacy.
Mr. Ortsin reiterated that GHANET’s mission is to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS in Ghana. “It’s a season of love, let’s spread love; not the virus!” he urged.
