NUGS Demands Reforms from WAEC Over Unfair Treatment of Students

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called out the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for its arbitrary and unfair exercise of discretionary power in handling examination results. At a press conference held at the NUGS Secretariat, President Daniel Nii Korley Botchway expressed concerns over WAEC’s actions, which have led to severe injustices for thousands of students.

NUGS highlighted several key concerns, including:

Lack of Fair Hearing and Due Process: WAEC cancels or withholds results without giving students a chance to defend themselves.
– *Delays in Processing Withheld Results*: WAEC withholds results under the guise of “suspected collusion,” only to release them after the admission window for public universities has closed.
– *Unfair Cancellation of Entire Results*: WAEC cancels entire results for candidates accused of malpractice in just one subject.
– *Absence of a Proper Appeal Mechanism*: WAEC does not provide a structured appeal process for students to challenge decisions made against them.

These actions, NUGS argues, have severe consequences for students, including depression, anxiety, loss of confidence, and exploitation by unscrupulous individuals.

NUGS has demanded that WAEC take immediate action to address these concerns, including:

– Releasing all withheld results within one week
– Limiting cancellations to only the specific subject where malpractice occurred
– Providing a fair hearing for all accused candidates
– Establishing a transparent and accessible appeal process
– Committing to releasing complete results instead of withholding some under questionable circumstances

If WAEC fails to meet these demands, NUGS has threatened to mobilize all Ghanaian students for a nationwide protest and to call for the removal of the Head of WAEC Ghana.

As the umbrella body representing over 13 million Ghanaian students, NUGS remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of students across the country
